In the late 90s, Sega was at the height of its commercial power. Few other companies could compete with their library of software, and their marketing prowess made them a titan in a market where video games were only profitable as long as they remained popular. They had no reason to worry about competition from Sony or Nintendo - after all, who wanted a disc that you had to load each time you turned it on? In Japan the PlayStation was overshadowed by Sega's Saturn and Dreamcast consoles, but in North America they were poised for success. "Yakyūken Special", an arcade title that made its way to both PlayStation and Saturn, is a "contra"-style scrolling shooter where the player controls a baseball diamond. Running back and forth along this diamond are left-handed pitchers, who throw series of pitches at the player, who is situated at home plate. Each pitcher will preface his pitch with some sort of taunt or celebration, giving the player a little bit of time to prepare for what's coming their way. The game can be played completely with either keyboard or controller, but it's much more fun if you use the standard Japanese arcade-style Konami Twin Sticks. The PlayStation version allows players to play against other players via modem connection. In the Saturn version, players could also play against a CPU if they'd like a practice jaunt. The PS1 version of this game is a complete conversion. There are no frame rate or sound issues with it over the PS2 re-release - which is a shame, as it's pretty to look at. Most of the audio, however, has been redone as well as the voices. This was one of those titles that got to be forgotten after Saturn and Dreamcast were released in Japan and Europe respectively. There's an Easter egg in the PlayStation version of this game that allows players to play "Gottlieb Pinball" on their TV screen. The player must press Start and select the Extra Options, thenEnter Konami Code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right) to access an emulator for a Japanese NES title. "Yakyūken Special" was released in Japan and did fairly well enough to warrant a US release. To this day it's one of the few games that has been released for the Saturn in Japan. "Yakyuken Special" was widely panned in Japan, but in North America it was received favorably by the press. IGN praised its gameplay, while reviewers at IGN said that "the game can be painfully hard when you're losing." GameSpot called it "a fun little diversion for fans of the typical arcade shooter." 1UP.com praised its inclusion in Marvel vs. Capcom, calling it "a very original game that will definitely help expand your game library. cfa1e77820
